Are you Really Ready for a Website?

Today everyone wants to be on the web, whether you are an individual looking to connect with others or a business owner looking for clients. If you don’t have a website you have been seriously thinking about starting one.  Are your a business owner looking to take the plunge into the online market, a nonprofit in need of an online presence, an individual wanting to set up a personal webpage, it does not matter who you are there are some key factors that apply to all wanting to start up a website. You need to go into it prepared. This preparation  includes making some important decisions  before starting the website or handing the job over to someone else. Here is a list of questions that will help you get started.

  • What is the overall type of site you would like? For instance what is the primary need of the site?  Will it be to sell product or services, provide information to others, a blog or a combination of these things?
  • How should the site look and feel? Should it be extremely professional and conservative or more casual and fun?
  • What is your budget and time frame?
  • What type of content do you want on the site? Are there going to be images, music, videos, advertisements, bios, etc.
  • Once you have decided the content you need to determine if you have the items on hand. If not what type of money and effort are you willing to put out in order to get them? For example are your offering products with images, do you have product descriptions ready to pass along to the web developer? Or if you want music is it yours if not are you prepared to pay a royalty to use someone else’s?

The whole process of creating a website can be overwhelming but having answers to these questions ahead of time will make you better prepared. If you chose to have someone create the site for you they should put together a website plan. Having these questions answered will help speed up the process and eliminate a lot of the back and forth that can go on at the beginning stages. It also provides a clear picture of what you want and need in the site. Presenting your ideas and materials to the developer will ensure they build a site on your vision and business needs not theirs.
